In the process, he permits his readers to experience the explosive fullness of contemporary Indian life—its sensuality and asceticism; passion for food, scents, music, and film; love for the gods, holidays, and ceremony; the viciousness of Hindu-Muslim enmity; and intellectuality and devotion. More remarkably, the book can be read with pleasure by those who know nothing of Hindu mythology and philosophy, despite the fact that Suri embeds his narrative in some of the deepest features of that religion. Jalal and Vinod Taneja recapitulate the classic Hindu stages of life student, householder, ascetic.

Vishnu Purana - Wikipedia

It refers mainly to the Vedas themselves. It is authoritative only to the extent that it conforms to the bedrock of Shruti. Both Shruti and Smriti can be represented as a continuum, with some texts more canonical than others. Brahmananda Purana that is source of the Mohini Story according to Wikipedia was written between 3th to 10 century AD.

Now all these puranas served as propaganda to elevate one god over other. So there is the long running tug of war to Vishnu summary either Vishnu or Shiva as superior.

Now let me summarise the origin of mohini. The Amrita, or nectar of immortality, is produced by the churning of the Ocean of Milk. The Deva and the Asura fight over its possession. The Asuras contrive to keep the Amrita for themselves, angering the Devas.

Vishnu, wise to their plan, assumes the form of an "enchanting damsel". She uses her allure to trick the Asuras into giving her the Amrita, and then distributes it amongst the Devas. Rahuan Asura, disguises himself as a god and tries to drink some Amrita himself.

Surya the sun-god and Chandra the moon-god quickly inform Vishnu, and he uses the Sudarshana Chakra the divine discus to decapitate Rahu, leaving the head immortal.

The decapitated body becomes Ketu. In the Bhagavata Purana, after Vishnu deceives the demons by his maya female form, Shiva wishes to see the bewildering Mohini again. When Vishnu agrees and reveals his Mohini form, Shiva runs crazily behind Mohini, "bereft of shame and robbed by her of good sense," while the abandoned wife Parvati Uma looks on.

His "unfailing" seed escapes and falls on ground creating ores of silver and gold. Afterwards, Vishnu comes to his true form and reveals that his maya illusory power cannot be surpassed even by Shiva. Now a Metaphorical interpretation will be Samudra Manthan Is Self Introspection The asuras are the Negative emotions in us The Devas are the positive emotions in us When you self introspect… many things are churned our… some good and some really poisonous … like rage and anger.

So Vishnu manifests as Mohini Mohini is the Guru Principle So the Guru initially helps to make the positive traits stronger… and eliminates the demon of Attachment Rahu So what happens? Renunciation Only when viveka and Vairagya are together can the truth be ascertained.

When the intellect becomes enamoured by the powers, miracles of the guru… the truth is obscured. So the seed of power has to be discharged… and the exercise yields ores of gold and silver… which future generations of sadhaks can purify and benefit from.

Once the seed of power is discharged the true nature of the world and true nature of Guru becomes apparent The true Brahman Vishnu is apparent and the True power of the Truth is realised!!!
